Braid: Notley bans B.C. campaigning but chief listed as player

Embarrassing! John Heaney, Premier Rachel Notley’s chief of staff, is a “Registered Election Advertising Sponsor” for the British Columbia campaign now under way.

Last Thursday, Notley banned her political staff from campaigning for the B.C. NDP, which opposes the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion she backs so ardently.

“That is the message that has been delivered and I trust that people will follow it,” she said.

On Monday, it emerged that Heaney, Notley’s chief of staff at an annual salary of $287,000, is on the advertising sponsor list with Elections B.C., the non-partisan oversight body.

The online list is dated April 13, 2017 — two days after the campaign began for the crucial May 9 election, and the very day Notley confirmed a ban that had been clear to her staffers for some time.
